Venturing Crew 181 is a youth-led robotics and engineering program that combines the opportunities of Scouting America Venturing with hands-on STEM experiences through Keystone STEM Alliance and BLAST Robotics.

Chartered under the Chester County Council, Scouting America, Crew 181 provides high-school-age youth with a distinctive pathway to pursue robotics, engineering, technology, leadership, community service, career exploration, and adventure.

Venturing is designed for young people ages 14 through 20, or age 13 after completing eighth grade, and crews are intentionally youth-led: members elect officers and help design their own programs while adult Advisors provide guidance and mentorship.

Crew 181 is based in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, and holds an official charter from Scouting America, granted to Keystone STEM Alliance, Inc. This charter authorizes the crew to carry out the Scouting program for character development, citizenship training, leadership, and mental and physical fitness.

What This Means for Families

• A recognized Scouting America unit: Crew 181 operates under the Charter, Bylaws, and Rules and Regulations of Scouting America.
• Youth leadership with adult guidance: Elected student officers lead the crew, while adult Advisors provide mentorship and support.
• Recognition on two fronts: Students can earn Venturing awards and leadership credentials while gaining robotics experience with BLAST Robotics, FRC Team 10989.

Crew 181 takes the youth-led Venturing model and applies it directly to robotics and engineering.

Crew 181 follows Venturing's emphasis on youth leadership. Scouting America's Venturing model places elected youth officers in leadership of the crew, with adult Advisors serving as mentors and guides.

Students have opportunities to plan activities, manage projects, organize outreach, teach technical skills to others, coordinate community-service initiatives, and help operate a real student-led STEM organization.

Venturing emphasizes learning by doing, group activities, adult association, leadership, recognition and teaching others. Crew 181 integrates these principles into engineering experiences.

A student might begin by learning CAD or programming, progress to designing part of a competition robot, teach that skill to another student, lead a technical subteam, and eventually help manage an entire project or outreach initiative.
